What To Do In An Emergency

If you and your pet understand what you can expect at our emergency veterinary clinics, the process will be easier for both of you. Here are our recommended steps to follow:

STEP 1. Call Ahead

Please call our hospitals ahead of time to ensure we have the capacity to treat your pet. If we do not have the capacity, we will refer you to another emergency animal hospital in the area.

STEP 2. Complete Our Patient Admission Form

Once you've called to let us know you're on the way, please complete our Patient Admission Form online.

STEP 3. Get To Our Office Right Away

Upon your arrival at the clinic, please come inside to check in. Inform the receptionist of your pet's symptoms so we can advise you of wait times. 

STEP 4. Determine Treatment

Once your pet has been assessed, our highly trained veterinarians will develop a treatment plan so your pet will receive the best possible treatment.

We will keep your primary care veterinarian updated with your pet's medical history to ensure seamless, integrated care that meets your pet's needs.

Emergency veterinary care involves the treatment of animals in situations that require immediate medical attention or could potentially be life-threatening.

  • What is considered an emergency?

    The following circumstances are considered emergencies and will need immediate veterinary care. If your pet has been seriously injured, had an accident or is experiencing any of these symptoms, bring them to one of our emergency pet clinics in Boulder or Westminster right away.

    • Staggering and/or seizures 
    • Obvious signs of extreme pain or anxiety 
    • Pain related to passing feces or urinating, or inability to pass feces or urinate
    • Severe lameness, inability to move legs or fractured bones 
    • Bleeding that hasn't stopped, or severe bleeding 
    • Difficulty breathing, continuous coughing/gagging, or choking 
    • Injuries to the eye(s) 
    • Bleeding from the mouth, nose, rectum, or blood in urine
    • Refusal to drink for 24 hours or more
    • You know or suspect your pet has ingested something poisonous (such as chocolate, rodent poison, xylitol, antifreeze, etc.)
    • Severe vomiting or diarrhea; more than two episodes in 24-hours
    • Heatstroke or heat stress 
    • Unconsciousness

  • How long will we have to wait to see the vet?

    Similar to a human emergency department, a veterinary emergency hospital can be unpredictable and you may need to wait. 

    We are unable to predict which cases we will see and when they will arrive, but cases will be prioritized based on medical need. 

    You'll find a comfortable area for waiting, and we will do our best to keep you updated about wait times and your pet's status. 

  • When is your emergency clinic open?

    Our Westminster location is open 24/7, 365 days a year.

    Our Boulder location is open 24 hours on Friday through Monday, and from 9am-9pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

  • Will you keep in touch with our primary care veterinarian?

    Yes, we will keep your primary care veterinarian updated with your pet's medical history and files to ensure your pet receives seamless, integrated care.

Please note that our Boulder location provides emergency care starting at 8am Friday through 8pm Monday. We're closed on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
